Rules & Safety

Rules:
Rock City Riot is a men’s league, but in the absence of a specific set of rules for men’s roller derby, most leagues play by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rulebook. The rules can be found at www.wftda.com.

Skills and Safety:
This is a rough and tumble high contact sport. Think about it, you put on skates and join a pack of guys all trying to hit one jammer while trying to protec their own jammer. It makes for a whole lot of fun and the potential to get hurt badly if you’re careless. Enough of the lecture!

Skills – we train and teach you the skills you’ll need. Like how to fall small, blocking and hitting just to mention a few of the basics. For a list of the skills you’ll have after joining the Riot, check out this link: www.wftda.com

Safety – Because this is a high contact sport, safety is a part of the deal! Many of the rules in roller derby come back to skater safety. It’s a rough sport so the knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and helmet really do play a critical role in your ability to be a threat to the opposing team as a skater! Our ref’s do a fantastic job of making sure we’re following the rules and not hurting ourselves or others. Even with 42 pages of rules there’s still a ton of hitting, smacking, bumping (no grinding) and full on thwacking you can do that’s all legal and safe! Just writing this makes me wanna give someone a big shoulder ‘tap’ – but since I’m in the airport, I better not! I’m too pretty for jail!
